I’m the type of girl who loves to experiment. Whether it be with my cooking, fashion or makeup, I just get bored if I don’t change things up every so often. This theory holds true to my skincare as well. It’s very rare that I keep a product in my routine and repurchase it over and over again. There are just too many options and new things to try. These four drugstore products have defied all odds and stayed in my arsenal for some time now.
1) Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock in SPF 45 – About a year ago I started to wear sunscreen on my face and neck daily because some of the other skincare products I use require it and it’s just a smart health choice. Before I found this product I was afraid that sunscreen would break me out or irritate my sensitive skin, but I have never had that problem with this product. I feel like the coverage is great with UVA and UVB protection and I love how it’s not greasy at all. This sunscreen is always my last step before I put on my makeup. I apply a decent amount to my face and neck, then let it dry for a minute. Afterwards I buff on my mineral foundation as usual. There are a couple of cons with this product, but I feel like they are things that I can overlook. First, I find that if I put the sunscreen on before I workout, the sweat can cause it to migrate into my eyes and it really stings. The other con is the price. I got mine for about $10 for a 3oz. bottle. This is not expensive compared to most of the sunscreens found at Sephora or department stores, but it is a little bit steep for a drugstore brand. If I were to use this all over my body daily the price would definitely be an issue, but since I only apply to my face and neck it’s not that bad. One bottle lasts me about 2-3 months.
2) Clean & Clear’s Soft In-Shower Facial STEAM – I have bought this product 4 times now and I love it! I keep it in my shower and apply to my face when I get in. Then near the end of my shower, right before I rinse off, I gently use my hands to massage this around my face. It’s an amazing experience! I use it a couple of times a week as an exfoliator and it leaves my skin so clean feeling and fresh. When I have this on there is a slight cooling sensation that feels really great. Unfortunately I heard that this product has been discontinued and rereleased in the Clean & Clear Morning Burst line. I will try out the new version, which is in a white package with orange letters, once I run out of mine. Hopefully they haven’t changed the formula too much!
3) Neutrogena’s Rapid Clear Acne Eliminating Gel – I don’t know why, but my skin just absolutely loves salicylic acid. I learned this little fact about a year ago and it has really helped me control my hormone related breakouts. Instead of using this product after I get a pimple, I use if more like a preventative measure. In the morning and night I apply a very thin layer of this gel to areas on my face, such as my chin, that are prone to breakouts. After the salicylic treatment is on I apply my moisturizer, which prevents the product from drying out my skin. This simple 30 second step has really made an improvement in my skin. I actually start panicking when I’m running low. Although the tube is pretty small, it does last a couple of months and frankly I will pay anything for a product that keeps my skin clear!
4) Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream – I have only been using this product for about 3 months, but I am already in love! I’m in my mid twenties and it’s about that time to start thinking about wrinkle prevention. I have never used another anti-wrinkle product, so I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I bought this. The active ingredient is Retinol, which I have heard good things about, but I wasn’t ready to take the plunge for the full prescription version. I have been applying the anti-wrinkle cream twice a day. I put it on after my salicylic acid gel and before my sunscreen. In the summer months it has been moisturizing enough to not need an additional cream with it, but that may need to be added in the winter when my skin gets very dry. In the short time that I have been using this product I have seen a very noticeable difference in my skin’s appearance and texture. First, my skin tone has become more even in appearance and smooth to the touch. (I have tried a $70 Kiehls skin tone corrector, which didn’t even come close to doing what this $10 Neutrogena product did.) Red spots that I’ve had from old breakouts have really been evened out and toned down. Also, I had a small laugh line on the left side of my mouth from a skincare laser study that I participated in as a teenager (don’t ask). Needless to say I didn’t complete the study because it severely dried out my skin and made me breakout. I was pretty self conscious about this laugh line, but it’s probably not very noticeable to most people. My husband actually thought I was crazy when I tried to point it out to him lol. The line is accentuated more because I wear mineral foundation, which apparently likes to settle into lines. The anti-wrinkle cream has really helped to plump up this line, which I can still notice but looks much better. In addition to all of these good things the cream just gives my skin an overall glow! I will definitely repurchase this when I run out, but the tube should last me for some time.
